Visagraph® III
Silent Reading Assessment System
Why Are Some Students Struggling Readers?
Reading is a complex process that involves close interaction among visual, perceptual, and cognitive functions. Inefficient visual skills and perceptual inaccuracies will result in most mental efforts being consumed by text processing, rather than meaning construction.
Silent Reading Assessment
The National Reading Panel Report (2000) documents the relationship of eye-movement recording to fluency in silent reading. The report states, “Research on the eye in the past two decades has provided a perspective from which to observe the fluent reading process.”

The Visagraph® is the result of more than 75 years of foundational studies in conjunction with leading reading research. Data collected with the Visagraph® provides teachers with unique insight into each student’s silent reading behavior, revealing what may be hindering
independent reading development. Designed to identify visual, perceptual, and information processing difficulties for struggling Tier 2 and 3 students, the Visagraph® provides an objective means of recording and evaluating silent reading efficiency. In minutes, a detailed analysis of an individual’s reading performance is generated.
How Is Visagraph® Assessment Conducted?
To start, Visagraph® goggles are placed over a student’s eyes and adjusted to align appropriately with his or her pupils. Then, while wearing the goggles, the student reads a short text selection from a test booklet and answers ten comprehension questions related to the story. The Visagraph® automatically generates a simulation of the student’s eye movements over the text, as well as multiple reports and data regarding:

For non-readers, a numbers tracking test and a visual skills test can be administered to determine adequacy of visual/functional skills.

Normative Tests and Data
The Visagraph® III provides 97 grade level selections, which were used in a Norm Study with 12,000 students ranging from grades 1 through college to establish reading efficiency normative data.

|
Non-Reading Tests
For non-readers a Numbers tracking test and a Visual Skills test can be administered to determine adequacy of visual/functional skills.

Integrated into Reading Plus®
Although the Visagraph® III can function completely independently of Reading Plus®, users can take full advantage of the integration between this assessment and the Reading Plus® instructional programs, whether working on a local area network or online.
